iPhone X – Is It Worth It? This Week in Digital

‘THIS WEEK IN DIGITAL’ SEEKS TO IGNITE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE BIGGEST ISSUES IN THE TECH WORLD. CHECK IN EACH FRIDAY TO STAY UP-TO-DATE AND GET INFORMED ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT IS, DIGITAL.

I am an Apple fan. I love Apple’s products since I bought a second generation iPod Mini. As an iPhone 6 user, I’m wondering if it’s time to upgrade to the new revolutionary iPhone X. So I have to ask myself, is the expected price hike really worth it?

The main reason why I’m considering buying the phone of the future, is the camera. Now, my iPhone 6 camera seems ancient when compared to pictures taken on the new device. The iPhone X is built with 2 rear cameras and a OLED screen (that phone fanatics will know is doing so well with Samsung devices) which I believe will solve my picture issues. But again, is it really worth spending over a thousand euro for a few upgrades?

iPhone X New Cool Features

The updated device comes with a full range of seriously cool features. Read a spec description and you’ll think “wow, this is great, I must have it!” Recently, I fell in love with Apple Pay. It’s great to pay using my phone rather than carry a wallet. It’s just so handy to use your fingerprint in any situation…

Now, just imagine only having to stare at your screen to do the same thing. This will become the normality as the latest facial recognition technology will replace the now, outdated fingerprint. In fact, iPhone X doesn’t have Touch ID at all – welcome Face ID. For the the luddites, you can still use the old fashioned 4 digit code.

The X is boasting wireless charging, isn’t it cool? Quirky or handy maybe, but what do you need it for exactly? The difference from plugging my cable in or placing on a tablet isn’t enough to shell out such money. Also, consider that Apple also introduced fast charging. Claiming unrivaled speed, your new device can get a 50% charge in just 30 minutes. Only putting out a measly 5 watts with the wireless alternative, why should I even bother?

Is It Worth Buying An iPhone X?

I’ve seen over the past years the main phone producers (Apple and Samsung) fighting to create the most groundbreaking technology. Whether the lightest or thinnest, with the best cameras and processors, it’s been incredible. But what improvements can actually help people to get the most out of their mobile experience? Nowadays, all high end phones are super thin, fast and light with amazing cameras. So now, the only thing they can do is add cool features – that grow the price but not the utility. Technology is simply growing faster than consumer needs.

The first iPod was an upgrade of the basic mp3 player. The first iPhone was a technological masterpiece featuring access to the internet, cameras and so on. These features were already available from competitors, but Apple perfected them. Now, consumers are experiencing wireless charging and face ID largely for the first time. So how can we make the most of those if we don’t really need them yet?

I probably feel like I’m just not ready. I’m just not sure if the advantages of having an iPhone X will justify the price tag. When we see the mass implementation of AI, AR, wireless charging and so on – then will be the time to make the switch.
